And there's a steep road running past my apartment, with a sharp bend. So I get to hear lots of supercars accelerating hard, twice. After a few years, I can now usually tell what performance car is going up the road by the sound. What's the easiest car to identify?

Porsches. That flat six cannot be mistaken for any other vehicle. It is also the only engine note in the whole world that really scares me.

These and WRX's, especially old ones. I still remember hearing a guy in college from 1/2 a mile away because he had the LOUDEST exhaust for his WRX combined with the loudest blow-off valve. What an amazing racket that was!

Aston Martin. A neighbor of mine has a V8 vantage, and since its his weekend car he only drives it hard. The V12 engined cars like the DB9 are easy to identify as well.

For me? Lamborghini's V10 like the one in the Gallardo. It's very distinctive, for me at least. Second place goes to Mercedes's 6.2l V8 and Third goes to Mazda's Rotary.

I'm doing my best to teach my neighbors what a V8 Vantage sounds like. In fact, I'll be driving it in a few hours for them to wake up to.

One of my neighbors has a really loud Subaru he likes to drive at 1AM. It sounds nice but it always wakes me up.

May have heard them before. R32s were pretty common until a few years ago. They've probably all migrated to MK6 GTIs or Golf Rs.
